What these labels mean

MOU active: An MOU is the agreement between an employer and the SkillBridge program. When it expires, the employer has to renew it before it can take new service members.
MOU expires soon: The agreement ends within 90 days. That is not a reason to rule a program out. It is a reason to ask the employer where the renewal stands.
MOU expired: The date on the government listing has passed. We still show the program, because hiding it would shrink this directory in a way we could not explain. Confirm status with the employer before you apply.
MOU date not stated: The government listing carries no expiration date for this organization.
Detailed listing: The employer filled in most of its record: length, delivery method, eligibility, and a description of the work.
Partial listing: Some of those fields are filled in and some are blank.
Sparse listing: Very little of the record is filled in. That is common, and it is not a judgment about the program or the employer. It does mean you will have to ask them more questions directly.

Summary

The incumbent will serve as part of a professional backcountry trail crew and will spend 8 days at a time living and working in remote backcountry settings. The North Zone Trails Program covers 3 ranger districts and 926 miles of trail. Ability to hike over mountainous and steep terrain in inclement weather for extended periods of time a must. Candidates will work in small crews in remote and isolated settings spending the summer months camping in wilderness areas for eight days at a time. Availability from May-October required. No internships are available outside of these dates.

What the work involves

Individuals will serve as a professional trail crew member on the Nations First National Forest: The Shoshone. Crew members will use primitive tools to accomplish many miles of trail maintenance throughout the season. Regular use of hand tools to install water bars, check-steps, retaining walls, clear trail corridor of trees and downed debris and to widen trail tread. Applicant must be able to hike (12 miles) in rugged and mountainous terrain while carrying a heavy pack daily. Repetitive bending/stooping with heavy packs. Expected to work 10 hours of manual labor everyday in isolated backcountry settings where Grizzly bear are prolific.

This position is with the Developed Recreation Department. The incumbent will be stationed at one of our beautiful ranger stations where big horn sheep are seen out the back door. Job duties include; patrolling campgrounds, camper and visitor interactions, maintenance of forest service buildings and campgrounds, general grounds maintenance, and stocking of vault toilets. You will be working in the Clarks Fork area of the Shoshone National Forest. The work station you will be working out of is the Crandall ranger station.

The incumbent would work as a fisheries technician to support stream restoration and aquatic habitat projects across the Shoshone National Forest in coordination with the District Fish Biologist. The Shoshone National Forest has many miles of streams and alpine lakes with native fish, including Yellowstone cutthroat trout, and other game non-native species. This position involves electrofishing surveys, monitoring restoration effectiveness, implementing beaver dam analogs, assisting with stream restoration planning, and collecting beaver‑use data to inform potential beaver translocations. Fieldwork occurs in rugged mountain terrain, often in inclement weather, and requires hiking long distances, carrying heavy packs, and working in areas with abundant grizzly bears.

What the work involves

The Fisheries Technician will support aquatic habitat restoration and fisheries management projects throughout the Shoshone National Forest, working closely with biologists to collect field data, implement restoration structures, and assist with project planning. Primary duties include conducting electrofishing surveys in wadeable streams, monitoring restoration effectiveness through habitat assessments and fish sampling, installing beaver dam analogs and other low‑tech restoration structures, and collecting beaver‑use data to evaluate potential translocation sites. Opportunities also exist to gain experience in other resource areas including wildlife, hydrology, and archaeology. The position requires extensive fieldwork in rugged, remote mountain terrain, often during inclement weather, and involves hiking long distances, carrying heavy packs, and working in streams while wearing waders. The technician must be comfortable navigating steep slopes, working around swift water, and operating safely in areas with abundant wildlife, including grizzly bears. Strong data‑recording skills, teamwork, and a willingness to work in challenging outdoor conditions are essential. This position is an unpaid internship, the Forest Service will not be paying wages. Applicant will need to pay for their own housing, however some bunkhouse space is available at an affordable rate.

Summary

Work sites are located in the Shoshone National Forest near Cody, Wyoming. This is a beautiful area with abundant backcountry and Wilderness areas. Time-off recreational opportunities include hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, and typical activities in Cody, an iconic western town. Work is 40 hours per week, typically 4 days per week. Incumbent works out of 2-3 Forest Service housing facilities at 3 different locations, but may also choose to have their own housing in Cody. All housing costs are covered by the incumbent. Pets and family will not be allowed to stay overnight in Forest Service facilities. Training, a vehicle, and other basic equipment will be provided.

Eligibility

Incumbents should be in good physical condition and comfortable with working in grizzly bear country.

What the work involves

A pair of incumbents will work together and independently of the supervisor to 1) patrol roadside and in backcountry areas in the Beartooth Wilderness, making public contacts with roadside Forest visitors, campers, and backpackers to educate and ensure food storage compliance (bears); 2) conduct inventories of fences along and near Forest roads to support fence removals and modifications to occur in the future, and 3) conduct roadside surveys of hikers destined for trailheads used to access high-elevation grizzly bear (moth) foraging sites. Training, a vehicle, and other basic equipment will be provided. Some backpacking and short overnight stays in the backcountry will be required. Otherwise, work will be out of Forest Service housing along or near roads. Incumbents should be in good physical condition and comfortable with working in grizzly bear country. The supervisor will mentor the incumbents and provide guidance on how to prepare for and obtain Forest Service wildlife jobs.

As an Operator Assistant you will:- Receive training on vehicle operation, pulling with a trailer, loading/unloading equipment safely, performing equipment checks, operating equipment, servicing equipment, and road construction/maintenance principles.- Assist the lead operator with a variety of functions related to road maintenance and construction on the National Forest Service Road System.- Transport equipment and materials to remote jobsites on Forest roads.- Handle materials and equipment with minimal supervision.- Function as safety spotter for equipment operations.- Set up Traffic Control Systems with minimal supervision.- Conduct basic engineering surveys with supervision.- Perform moderate to arduous physical labor.- Safely and efficiently operate construction equipment such as: Skidloaders, Excavators, Dozers, and backhoes on all terrain types with minimal supervision. - Work in remote locations.
