What these labels mean

MOU active: An MOU is the agreement between an employer and the SkillBridge program. When it expires, the employer has to renew it before it can take new service members.
MOU expires soon: The agreement ends within 90 days. That is not a reason to rule a program out. It is a reason to ask the employer where the renewal stands.
MOU expired: The date on the government listing has passed. We still show the program, because hiding it would shrink this directory in a way we could not explain. Confirm status with the employer before you apply.
MOU date not stated: The government listing carries no expiration date for this organization.
Detailed listing: The employer filled in most of its record: length, delivery method, eligibility, and a description of the work.
Partial listing: Some of those fields are filled in and some are blank.
Sparse listing: Very little of the record is filled in. That is common, and it is not a judgment about the program or the employer. It does mean you will have to ask them more questions directly.

About U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) - National Park Service (NPS) - Mojave National Preserve

Mojave National Preserve is a unit of the National Park Service, a federal agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior. The preserve is located in the Mojave Desert in California and encompasses a range of ecological habitats with a documented human history spanning roughly ten thousand years. The nearest town to the preserve's operational hub is Baker, a community with a population of less than five hundred. The preserve maintains facilities divisions, visitor and resource protection operations, resource management functions, and an administrative office.

SkillBridge interns at Mojave National Preserve work in one of four in-person roles, each running ninety-one to one hundred twenty days. The Engineering Equipment Operator position places interns in the Facilities and Maintenance Division, where they use heavy equipment to repair and maintain roads and move material. The Maintenance Mechanic role involves assisting higher-graded tradespeople with carpentry, painting, plumbing, campground upkeep, chemical toilet servicing, and light equipment operation including a forklift. The Park Ranger position is an entry-level generalist role with duties that shift by season and may cover visitor interpretation, resource monitoring, backcountry patrol, and radio and GPS operations. The Administrative Support Assistant works in an office setting alongside the Administrative Officer on clerical tasks supporting the preserve and neighboring parks.

Housing is available for all positions. Depending on assignment, work may also be conducted at Joshua Tree National Park, Death Valley National Park, or other Interior facilities. Outdoor roles involve exposure to high temperatures, wind, and other desert weather conditions.

What the work involves

Assists higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work. Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on such tasks as replacing broken planks on picnic tables; broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replaces hinges, latches and catches. Performs minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels. Performs minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaces faucet washers; unplugs drains using a plunger; replaces liquid petroleum gas bottles. Receives, unloads and processes incoming shipments according to established procedures. Reports discrepancies and damage to others responsible for such items. Performs routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances. Collects trash. Operates a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work. Cleans and services chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities. Makes minor repairs as needed and refers problems to higher graded workers. Operates a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment not requiring special rigging.

What the work involves

This is an exciting opportunity to experience a range of park management duties. As an entry-level generalist position, the specific duties of the position will be determined by season and work priorities at the time of hire. Duties may be related to Interpretation, with visitor contact at preserve visitor centers or popular visitation sites. The intern will be trained in general interpretive principle and will also learn about a variety of topics in order to answer questions about the principles of responsible recreation and Leave No Trace, itinerary planning through answering questions about places to visit and things to do in the preserve, as well as the rules and regulations pertaining to activities such as camping. The intern may also be required to assist visitors with lost and found articles, give information about safe travel and hazards in the desert, and other similar concerns. Depending on needs of preserve at time of appointment, the intern could also be assigned to duties in Resource Management or Visitor and Resource Protection. In Resource Management, these activities include basic resource monitoring, identifying and reporting resource damage, and assisting with recording, entering, and analyzing data. In the preserve’s Visitor and Resource Protection division, work may involve patrol of backcountry roads, contact with visitors to encourage compliance with preserve regulations and policies, help with minor car trouble (e.g., using a radio to call for assistance) and observing and maintain records of road and resource conditions. To support these activities, training will also be provided in off-road driving, use of radio communications, and GPS navigation. The preserve is a remote area and with an arid desert climate. Work typically takes place far from amenities. The intern maybe be subject to harsh weather conditions such as high temperatures but occasionally including cold, wind/windstorms, rain including late summer monsoons, snow (rare), depending on the season. Housing is available in the preserve.
