About U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) - Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is an agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior. Its stated mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The BLM manages approximately 245 million acres of public lands and oversees programs spanning energy and minerals, recreation, wildlife, wildland fire, wild horse and burro management, and cultural resources.
Through its SkillBridge program, the BLM offers six in-person internship positions across three states: Alaska, Idaho, and Oregon. Each position runs between 91 and 120 days. The roles reflect the range of work the agency carries out on public lands. Depending on the position, an intern may support visitor services at a permit office and visitor center along the Rogue River Wild and Scenic section, perform recreation site maintenance including trail work and facility upkeep, conduct wildlife habitat inventories and compile survey data, provide telecommunications support for radio networks and wildfire incidents at the National Interagency Fire Center, assist with federal budget formulation and expenditure tracking, or work alongside natural resource specialists on field inventories and resource management reporting.
All positions are in-person and require U.S. citizenship. Each appointment is subject to a background and suitability investigation. Some roles involve physical demands such as hiking distances of two to five miles and lifting up to 80 pounds. Interns work directly with agency staff and, in several roles, with members of the public.

As a Medford District BLM Park Ranger, you would support the Bureau of Land Management's recreation program primarily at the Smullin Visitor Center and Rogue River Permit Office. The Smullin Visitor Center is located on the banks of the picturesque Rogue River.
What the work involves

What the work involves
This position may include building and maintaining a variety of recreation trails and facilities; providing trail and recreation site information to the public; recreation site maintenance including building and sign maintenance/ installation; and public contact, including educating visitors about rules and regulations. One of the principal duties of this position will be restroom re-stocking, sweeping, moping, and sanitizing restroom and toilets at campgrounds and outlying recreation sites. Cleaning campground sites including ashes from fires, trash pickup and raking. Duties may include environmental education/outreach to school groups and adults, on guided hikes or outreach events. Work is moderate in difficulty in both extreme summer heat and moderate off-season temperatures. Hiking distances of 2 to 5 miles is common. Lifting up to 80 lbs is occasionally required. Job may include other duties as assigned.

What the work involves
Provide Support for the Bureau of Land Management, in both day-to-day operations and emergency management through the successful operation and maintenance of a Radio Network. This work includes, but is not limited to: Clone and program handheld, mobile radios, and dispatch consoles; Troubleshoot basic hardware and software problems for users; Install basic hardware and delivers equipment to state and field offices for voice and data equipment installation; Work closely with the supervisor/higher graded specialist in inspecting and analyzing state, district, and field office radio systems to ensure they meet established standards; Assist the supervisor or higher graded specialist to determine the most effective and economical equipment and services; Follow simple operating procedures related to radio communications systems and microwave networks; Work on equipment moves and additions with vendors and/or customers and assist supervisor/higher graded specialist with installs, including vehicle radio equipment installation, and relocation of radio and digital interface equipment to meet urgent service needs when contractor services are not possible; Provide routine advice and guidance to customers requesting basic information on established procedures, including those related to very high frequency (VHF)/ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio operation; Provide telecommunication support for wildfire and prescribed fire incidents.
