What these labels mean

MOU active: An MOU is the agreement between an employer and the SkillBridge program. When it expires, the employer has to renew it before it can take new service members.
MOU expires soon: The agreement ends within 90 days. That is not a reason to rule a program out. It is a reason to ask the employer where the renewal stands.
MOU expired: The date on the government listing has passed. We still show the program, because hiding it would shrink this directory in a way we could not explain. Confirm status with the employer before you apply.
MOU date not stated: The government listing carries no expiration date for this organization.
Detailed listing: The employer filled in most of its record: length, delivery method, eligibility, and a description of the work.
Partial listing: Some of those fields are filled in and some are blank.
Sparse listing: Very little of the record is filled in. That is common, and it is not a judgment about the program or the employer. It does mean you will have to ask them more questions directly.

Job Title – Area Mechanic Job Description –Under general supervision, has initial responsibility for operation of all buildings and equipment in assigned area and performing skilled tasks in the inspection, maintenance and repair of mechanical systems, facility maintenance, and operation. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 1. Knowledge of safety precautions mandated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, National Fire Prevention Association, National Fire Code, Environmental Protection Agency, etc. 2. Knowledge of preventive maintenance necessary for equipment and ability to maintain appropriate records. 3. Knowledge of the carpentry, painting, roofing, masonry and plastering trades sufficient to inspect buildings to provide corrective solutions and make recommendations to correct existing problems. 4. Knowledge of proper lifting and bend techniques and ability to lift 50 pounds. 5. Ability to operate tools and equipment safely which are used in the electrical, mechanical, steam, and plumbing trades. 6. Ability to interpret blueprints, diagrams, equipment specifications, schematics and engineering/architectural concept statements. 7. Ability to work in a variety of environments including confined spaces, low light areas, at height and exposure to temperature extremes, radiation and toxic chemicals. 8. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. 9. Ability to maintain accurate records and inventory of supplies. 10. Ability to troubleshoot electrical, plumbing, HVAC equipment and control malfunctions. Summary

Building Operations and Maintenance is part of the Building & Landscape Services department within FM. Building Operations & Maintenance includes five area teams who support the General Education Fund (GEF) facilities across the main campus in Iowa City as well as the Oakdale campus in Coralville. Each area team consists of area mechanics, pipefitters, environmental systems mechanics, and electricians. These teams are supported by an area manager as well as an area planner. These maintenance employees play a critical role for our campus by providing stewardship to the university facilities, performing preventive maintenance (PM) work as well as addressing issues in a corrective manner when needed. The ESM role requires four years of experience and is heavily based upon heating, ventilation, and air conditioning knowledge. These systems are critical to serving the needs of our customers.

What the work involves

Under direct supervision, performs skilled work in the area of installation, repair, alteration, replacement and maintenance of components of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating (all fuel types) equipment. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:1. Knowledge of the principles of operations, methods, materials and tools utilized in the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, calibration and repair of air-moving, heating, cooling, humidification and filtering equipment and systems such as fans, heat pumps, gas unit heaters, forced air equipment, furnaces, radiant heating, condensers, compressors, pumps, fan coil units, rooftop package air conditioning units, computer room cooling units, etc.2. Ability to properly braze refrigeration tubing and connections.3. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions mandated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, National Fire Prevention Association, National Fire Code and the Environmental Protection Agency, etc.4. Knowledge, skill and ability to evaluate equipment for either repair or replacement and determine the amount of time and materials necessary to accomplish the task with least downtime of equipment.5. Ability to interpret blueprints, diagrams and equipment specifications.6. Knowledge of proper bending and lifting techniques.7. Skill in the proper use and care of hand and power tools and test equipment.8. Ability to work in areas of high heat, dust and noise and in confined spaces or on a ladder.9. Ability to work independently during the normal workday and in an on-call status.10. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.11. Ability to work in all types of environmental conditions or in areas where there is exposure to excessive noise, dirt, and fumes and at elevated heights from ladders, scaffolds, or hydraulic lifts.12.
