What these labels mean

MOU active: An MOU is the agreement between an employer and the SkillBridge program. When it expires, the employer has to renew it before it can take new service members.
MOU expires soon: The agreement ends within 90 days. That is not a reason to rule a program out. It is a reason to ask the employer where the renewal stands.
MOU expired: The date on the government listing has passed. We still show the program, because hiding it would shrink this directory in a way we could not explain. Confirm status with the employer before you apply.
MOU date not stated: The government listing carries no expiration date for this organization.
Detailed listing: The employer filled in most of its record: length, delivery method, eligibility, and a description of the work.
Partial listing: Some of those fields are filled in and some are blank.
Sparse listing: Very little of the record is filled in. That is common, and it is not a judgment about the program or the employer. It does mean you will have to ask them more questions directly.

Summary

This internship offers transitioning military members with knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience in the field of electrical maintenance and repair, to become a proficient Electrician by providing comprehensive instruction including troubleshoot and repair electric motors, fans, and lighting systems; and install lighting outlets, switches and receptacles as well as the maintenance and testing of emergency generator and fire alarm systems and public utilities standards while receiving mentorship in a supportive team environment. Through progressive weekly training, participants will develop technical competency, operational independence, and contribute to real-world projects in the Virginia Beach Public Utilities department.

What the work involves

Assist and/or troubleshoot and repair electric motors, fans, and lighting systems; and install lighting outlets, switches and receptacles, maintenance and testing of emergency generator and fire alarm systems, receive work order assignments by either oral or written instructions in the tasks of installation, maintenance and repair of electrical power systems to ensure that assigned tasks are accomplished and meet the quality of standards, participate in work involving preventive maintenance, distribution panels and equipment, circuit systems, controls and light fixtures, participate in repairs, installation and maintenance of fire alarms, public address systems, enunciator and other communication systems to ensure proper operation and to prevent equipment failure, and generate work orders and daily log sheets in a neat and orderly fashion.

What the work involves

Learn the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities, required to become a successful Utility Mechanic to include: • Perform heavy manual labor in connection with the construction, maintenance, and repair of sanitary sewer pumping stations, sanitary sewer lines, mains, and related equipment. • Perform manual labor such as hand excavation and heavy movement items in performance of job duties. • Operate motor vehicles and/or construction equipment. • Assist in diagnosing and troubleshooting utility problems, mechanical pump failures and/or pump malfunctions. • Follow proper Federal safety and environmental regulations and standard operating procedures. • Occasionally prepare written documentation of work activities and safety permits. • Respond to verbal customer inquiries. • Assist in informal employee training; diagnose simple utility problems; follow work orders and prioritize simple work tasks to accomplish repairs. • Select and operate proper tools, equipment, and/or vehicles to complete utility repairs. • Work in confined or elevated spaces. • Operate and perform user maintenance of City licensed vehicles and equipment. • Water/Sewer Line Maintenance • Assist in performing routine scheduled and emergency repairs and maintenance functions to water and sanitary sewer systems. • Operate equipment, such as sewer combination vehicles, dump trucks, trenchers, and light construction equipment. • Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment. • Meter Operations • Assist in performing routine scheduled and emergency repairs and maintenance functions to water meters and associated appurtenances. • Operate dump trucks and light construction equipment. • Water / Sewer Pump Stations Assist in performing routine scheduled and emergency repairs and maintenance functions to water or sewer pump station facilities and associated appurtenances. • Operate light construction equipment. • Transport and assist in the operation of emergency equipment. • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. • Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

What the work involves

Perform a variety of tasks in support of an engineering survey party involved in system record keeping, field verification and basic survey work. Representative Work Functions and Responsibilities • Assist in land surveying by holding grade rod, giving sights on fixed points using plumbob, front or rear chaining to determine elevation, property lines and distances. • Perform manual tasks such as digging, cutting brush, or driving hubs and guard stakes to locate or mark property boundaries. • Double check calculations to ensure accurate field notes. • Operate electronic locating devices to mark existing utility lines or locate underground property pins. • Work in street or City right-of-way on a regular basis to gather field information. • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.
