What these labels mean
MOU active
An MOU is the agreement between an employer and the SkillBridge program. When it expires, the employer has to renew it before it can take new service members.
MOU expires soon
The agreement ends within 90 days. That is not a reason to rule a program out. It is a reason to ask the employer where the renewal stands.
MOU expired
The date on the government listing has passed. We still show the program, because hiding it would shrink this directory in a way we could not explain. Confirm status with the employer before you apply.
MOU date not stated
The government listing carries no expiration date for this organization.

Training is a Top Priority. Newport News Police Department has its own training academy, which provides skills and education well beyond what Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) requires.

Eligibility

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Requires a minimum of a high school or general diploma (GED) or a combination of education and training. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Must be 20 years of age at the time of the written test and 21 years of age at the time of appointment. Must pass an initial written test and physical agility. Requires a comprehensive background investigation to include a local, state and federal criminal history check; sex offender registry and credit check. Requires satisfactory results from a medical, psychological evaluation and pre-employment substance abuse testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing. A valid Virginia’s driver’s license prior to employment with an acceptable driving record to include a zero or positive point balance and are required to refrain from the use of tobacco. Must obtain and maintain for continued employment U.S. Citizenship prior to appointment as a Police Officer; all State requirements for Police Officers as specified in Virginia Code; all federal and state requirements to carry a firearm; and may require certifications such as Breathalyzer certification. Must be able to wear a standard issued duty belt with all applicable instrumentations. The job is considered Essential Personnel and will be required to work a variety of schedules in a 24 hour, 7 day a week, which includes, nights, weekends, holidays, and during and following natural disasters and emergency situations.

What the work involves

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES Under close supervision, this position serves as the entry level trainee classification where employees are required to attend and successfully complete a Police Academy to learn the proper procedures and policies in law enforcement and crime prevention. Reports to a Police Training Sergeant. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Learns techniques to evaluate situations and determines the most appropriate course of action including pursuing or apprehending suspects; interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects, and other contact persons; crime scene and evidence preservation. Studies various criminal activities requiring law enforcement intervention such as homicides, sexual assaults, robberies, property crimes, domestic violence, narcotics related activities, crimes by and against juveniles, and other crimes. Studies guidelines to present court testimony and maintain associated case files; becomes familiar with completing forms, preparing reports, and correspondence. Performs other duties as assigned. PERFORMANCE STANDARD Employees at all levels are expected to effectively work together to meet the needs of the community and the organization through work behaviors demonstrating the City’s Values. Employees are also expected to lead by example and demonstrate the highest level of ethics. Summary

As a Plumber Fellowship, you'll do on the job training install, repair, and maintain water and sewer systems in City buildings. From fixing leaks and replacing fixtures to troubleshooting plumbing systems and ensuring everything meets code, you'll use your skills to keep essential facilities operating safely and efficiently while delivering quality service to the community.

What the work involves

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES Under general supervision, this position is responsible for performing skilled and technical work in the repair, maintenance and installation of building water and sewer systems, fixtures and equipment. Reports to the Operations Superintendent - Building Services. There are two (2) levels of Plumber distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Installs new plumbing fixtures and lines; makes major repairs to plumbing systems, fixtures and equipment to include faucets, toilets, water fountains, sinks, drains, valves and water/drainage lines; unstops drain lines and installs water heaters and water coolers. Assists with troubleshooting, repairing and installing water and sewer systems; designs and re-designs systems to meet national and state code; performs inspections and tests on plumbing equipment and systems. Assists with repairing and replacing water heaters and re-circulating pumps, maintaining and repairing single and three phase electric pump motors and pump motor control centers and clearing stoppages in drains and sewers. Completes work orders and reports as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. PERFORMANCE STANDARD Employees at all levels are expected to effectively work together to meet the needs of the community and the organization through work behaviors demonstrating the City’s Values. Knowledge of laws and regulations governing the operation of equipment.  Safety - Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to equipment operation, hazardous materials, traffic patterns and conditions, and other work related precautions. REQUIRED SKILLS  Interpersonal Relationships/Customer Service – Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees and the public.  Judgement/Decision Making – Ability to anticipate, identify and evaluate potentially dangerous, unusual or deviating situations and to exercise appropriate judgment to establish priorities and take prompt action for problem resolution. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Plumber I – Requires a high school diploma and 1-2 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Plumber II - Requires a high school diploma and 3-5 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires a Journeyman’s Plumber License from the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Requires satisfactory results from a pre- employment medical evaluation. Must successfully complete the required National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System Certifications within one year of employment. The job is considered Essential Personnel and will be required to work during and following natural disasters and emergency situations. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS  Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work.  Some combination of climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.  May involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). SENSORY REQUIREMENTS  Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, odors, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.  Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
